A cool Festival of Speed debut in the Goodwood heat: the MG Cyber X is destined for the UK in 2027.
Sheltering indoors from the heat alongside Cyberster Black, while the new IM models soaked up the scorching sunshine, the MG Cyber X made a striking debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. But what is this mysterious SUV all about?
“MG has a tradition of creating emotive cars that stand-out from the crowd and we’re passionate about continuing this work as well as exploring how we might take the brand in some new, unexpected directions.” - Jozef Kaban, MG Vice President of SAIC Design
Poised as a dramatic new direction for MG’s design language, the ‘X’ slots neatly into the ‘Cyber’ sub-brand as an ‘all-electric urban explorer’. This means that despite some rugged — although extremely minimal — design cues, this 4x4 evoking crossover appears destined to belong in a city rather than a field upon release.
The Cyber X’s matte grey paintwork set the SUV apart from its surroundings within the MG stand. The minimalist approach of both car and display showcased the brand’s confidence to let the finer details of the enigmatic vehicle do the talking — and judging by the crowd, it turned more heads than just our own.

In terms of silhouette, the Cyber X is extremely boxy. This begins at the front, where the flat-faced façade is found topped with a light bar and sneaky pop-up headlights. Follow these upwards, and the angular Cybertruck-esque windscreen caps the front profile.
Side-on, the upright poise of the Cyber X is extremely apparent, sitting like a hyper-modernised version of the 1st-gen RAV 4. That said, it was comparisons to the similarly-sized Land Rover Defender which were most rife among the onlookers.
And, stepping around to the back, the JLR comparisons do make a lot of sense, with the large rear door reminiscent of the 90 model. However, the Cyber X’s sleek vertical rear profile is set apart by its minimalist approach, broken up by a light bar that matches the front, and capped either side by sleek wraparound taillights.
The Cyber X is strictly revealed in concept form for now, meaning the model on display at Goodwood was interior-less. However, based on its futuristic positioning, we’re expecting a technology-rich cabin to be a part of the final package.
The same goes for the yet-to-be-revealed electric powertrain options, which we expect to follow a similar forward-thinking logic as applied to its interior. And with the Cyber X being revealed alongside the MG IM5, we expect some impressive stats based on the latter’s 441-mile range and 17-minute charging time… But for now, we’ll just have to wait and see.
Speaking of waiting, unfortunately we’ll all have to twiddle our thumbs for a little while before the Cyber X takes to the streets. But, on the positive side, the futuristic crossover is destined for the UK when its 2027 release date rolls around.
As always, we’ll keep you updated on any developments around MG’s futuristic SUV, but in the meantime, what do you think of the Cyber X?
