Why do drivers of Britain’s best-selling SUVs love Continental UltraContact?

Kia Sportage

Small and mid-sized SUVs dominated the UK sales charts in 2024 thanks to their blend of versatility and practicality. But what was it about Continental’s UltraContact that was such a hit with the segment’s drivers?

Whether they’re small and mighty like Ford’s Fiesta-based Puma, or bigger and more family-friendly like Kia’s Sportage, SUVs are a staple on Britain’s roads. And for good reason. Often offering a handy helping of extra ride height — great for light off-roading or simply feeling more secure in traffic — as well as more spacious cabins and boots, they’re perfect for family life. Plus, thanks to the fact they now often share their mechanical underpinnings with fine-handling hatchbacks, they’re great fun to drive too.

So when it comes to tyres, it’s hardly surprising SUV drivers want rubber that can live up to that all-rounder billing. That’s why (thanks to the genuine feedback of thousands of real-world drivers) Continental’s Ultracontact won DriverReviews 2024/5 Customer Choice Award for Best Small and Mid-Sized SUV tyres.

Just like the SUVs which wear them, UltraContact tyres are robust, comfortable, safe, and unfazed by the UK’s erratic climate. Thanks to a YellowChili compound and harmonised tread pattern, you’ll be able to travel longer between tyre changes and enjoy whisper quiet road noise at motorway speeds. But don’t just take our word for it, here’s a few of 2024’s most popular SUV models — and what their drivers think about Continental’s UltraContact tyre.

Kia’s mid-sized Sportage topped the UK’s SUV sales charts last year after shifting a grand total of 47,163 units. And it's no surprise why — the practical Korean boasts a spacious interior, strong standard equipment, and the option of all-wheel drive.

Just like the security offered by that AWD configuration, many Sportage owners enjoyed the UltraContact’s robust wet-weather traction.

What did Sportage owners say about Continental UltraContact?

“I know I don’t have to worry about the weather when driving with these tyres.”

“Very satisfied with their performance on all road surfaces and in all weather conditions.”

Ford Kuga

Another stalwart of the mid-sized SUV segment, Ford’s Kuga made waves when it debuted back in 2008. Now, in it’s third generation, it’s still a hit with Brits on account of its sharp handling, refined motorway cruising ability, and strong performance.

As with the Kuga, UltraContact was also a hit with keen drivers. Owners praised the tyre for its strong grip across the board and hushed road noise at higher speeds.

What did Kuga owners say about Continental UltraContact?

“Good tyres. Grip well in all conditions and are quite quiet on long journeys.”

“Good all round tyre. Good grip with 4wD”

Audi Q2

At the more premium end of the spectrum, Audi’s A1-based Q2 had another strong year in 2024 — despite being destined for the chopping block soon. Much like it’s hatchback sibling, British buyers flocked to the small SUV for its plush feeling interior and strong driving dynamics.

According to buyers, the Q2’s polished road manners were further enhanced by Continental’s award-winning summer tyre.

What did Q2 owners say about Continental UltraContact?

“Very good, holds the road well and a lot quieter.”

“Excellent tyres. They make me feel safe in all conditions”

VW T-ROC

Last but not least: VW’s box-ticking T-ROC. Like the Q2, this handsome crossover sits at the more compact end of the scale, but that hasn’t stopped VW from squeezing in everything you need. In particular, the T-ROC’s punchy yet frugal engines and well-sorted suspension impressed Brits last year.

Continental’s combination of safety and security were equally admired by buyers of VW’s pint-sized SUV.

What did Q2 owners say about Continental UltraContact?

“Good grip, better handling generally, confidence building.”

Verdict

Performing like the Swiss Army Knife of cars, it’s clear we Brits can’t resist the versatility of a well-designed SUV or crossover.  And when it comes to choosing their tyres, it’s no surprise Continental’s UltraContact proved a strong fit. Designed to tackle the elements, crumbling British roads, and even save a few pennies at the pump, it’s the perfect choice for such well-rounded machines.
