Mention GTI to any hot hatch fan and they’ll paint a similar picture: a compact-yet-practical body, sporty styling, and performance that punches well above its weight class. Oh, and one other thing: a fizzy, characterful petrol engine.
It’s a formula that dates back to the original Golf GTI in 1976 and carried through to the first
Polo GTI in 2006. And, until now,
VW has never deviated from it.
So what happens when you take the engine away entirely?
Volkswagen's answer, revealed at the Nürburgring 24-hour race, is the ID. Polo GTI — the first fully electric car to wear the GTI badge in its 50-year history. It's a bold move, since the name carries real weight among enthusiasts, but Volkswagen has clearly engineered this car to meet that brief rather than dilute it.
The numbers back that up. With 223 bhp and up to 214 lb ft of torque sent exclusively to the front wheels — a deliberate nod to the original GTI layout — it sprints from 0-62 in a swift 6.8 seconds. Power is laid down through a standard-fit electronically controlled front differential lock, working with progressive steering and adaptive DCC sports suspension developed specifically for this car. Meanwhile, a dedicated GTI driving mode, triggered via the steering wheel, sharpens throttle response, steering, and suspension together while the digital cockpit switches to its own GTI colour scheme.
Visually, it's unmistakably part of the family: red grille stripe and 3D GTI logo up front, GTI-pattern honeycomb intakes below the LED matrix headlights, red stitching and tartan-inspired seats inside, plus an illuminated GTI badge in the headrests. A retro instrument view even displays song titles as though playing off a cassette tape — a wink to the ‘70s Golf MK1 era.
Going electric hasn't cost it any everyday usability, either. A 52-kWh battery gives a WLTP range of up to 263 miles, with rapid DC charging at up to 105 kW enabling a 10-80% top-up in around 24 minutes. Boot space has grown over 25% versus the outgoing combustion Polo GTI, to 441 litres (1,240 litres seats down), with more cabin and legroom too. It can even tow up to 1.2 tonnes, should you feel the need. Still a GTI, still usable daily — just with a battery instead of a turbo.

A car designed this precisely for handling and instant power delivery needs tyres to match, which is why Volkswagen turned to
Bridgestone for a bespoke fitment. The optional 19-inch
Bridgestone Potenza Sport in 235/40 R19 was designed from the ground up for this car, not adapted from an existing tyre.
Bridgestone built the Potenza Sport to carry the GTI's sporting character to the road while meeting three demands that matter daily, not just on track: braking performance, tyre wear, and road noise. That last point counts for more on an EV — with no engine noise to mask tyre roar, acoustics are far more important.
That’s why Potenza Sport benefits from Bridgestone's ENLITEN technology, engineered to balance performance, efficiency, and durability. It was shaped using Bridgestone's Virtual Tyre Development process, a simulation-led approach that fine-tunes construction and compound before physical testing begins, and is manufactured in Italy specifically for this application.

Bridgestone built this 19-inch fitment specifically for the ID. Polo GTI's electric torque, weight and noise profile. But the same engineering runs through the wider Potenza Sport range, which means the benefits — clean power delivery, durability under load, and a quieter ride — apply just as well to your car, GTI or not.
It's worth knowing this when your tyres are due for replacement, too. Don't assume your VW centre will fit the Potenza Sport by default — it's not always the go-to fitment at a service visit. Ensure you ask for Potenza Sport tyres specifically or visit
Blackcircles to have the right rubber fitted on your drive or at a garage near you.
