Performance Tyres Test

As more and more vehicle manufacturers look to expand their range into the sports car arena car tyres have had to keep pace. All tyre manufacturers produce sports tyres with a speed rating of Y or Z - allowing speeds of up to 186.4mph and 150+mph respectively (find out more about speed ratings here). Why have a car with such capabilities without tyres that can stand up to the test?

We stock a comprehensive range of performance tyres to suit both your vehicle and your driving style. Contact our sales force for impartial advice on 0845 620 2000.

Modern Sports Vehicles and Their Tyres

Subaru Impreza WRX – Tyre Option: Toyo Proxes T1 S

The Subaru WRX remains a phenomenal power play on the road. The 4WD and chassis are forgiving, predictable, rewarding and exciting, which is rare. A good performance car you can use everyday. An all round favourite in its class. The 2.0 Turbo normally comes as standard with 225/45 R17 Z tyres. A good option here is The Toyo Proxes T1-S tyre, which combines an aesthetically pleasing tyre tread design with superb performance. The V tread pattern helps wet handling. A tyre you can trust when you are pushing the car. An alternative would be the Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3.

Audi TT – Tyre Option: Pirelli P6000

This is the car that Europe's leading automotive designers regard as the most influential and cohesive design of its time. You might be frustrated by the lack of feedback from the chassis. But it remains a fast car from point to point. The 1.8 model is usually fitted with 225/40 R18 Z tyres. This tyre is renowned for comfort, and provides good traction in the wet. The P6000 tyre's rigid lateral tyre tread blocks helps improve this cars sports handling, but the tyre tread pattern also helps reduce road noise. An alternative would be the Continental Sport Contact or the Michelin Pilot Sport.

Lotus Elise – Tyre Option: Bridgestone Potenza RE040

The Lotus Elise is often considered a real drivers car. Lets face it there is not really any room for the shopping. However that is not why you buy it. This little sports car handles superbly, and looks fantastic. If this car is one thing it is responsive. The Sport 1.8i usually fits 175/55 R17 w tyres on the front, and 225/45 R17 W tyres on the back. In these sizes a good option is the Bridgestone Potenza RE040 tyre, which combine precision handling, great manoeuvrability and superb traction. An alternative for the Lotus would be the Michelin Pilot Sport.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII – Tyre Option: Yokohama Advan Neova AD08

This car is quick, but combines speed with reaction, balance and sharpness. It, like the Subaru, maintains its rallying pedigree, and with the power and performance you forgive the noise, and firm ride. The Lancer Evolution EVO VIII RS 11 and FQ models tend to be fitted with 235/45 R17 Z Tyres. In this tyre size an excellent sports tyre is the Yokohama Advan Neova AD08. The Advan Neova is not as hardwearing as other options in its class but does deliver superb grip and handling, coupled with good looks - not often we come across a good looking tyre! A good alternative to the Yokohama would be the Pirelli P6000 or for the cost concious the Nexen N3000.

BMW M3 – Tyre Option: Continental Sport Contact M3

The M3 is perhaps the most famous of all sports saloons and continues to be a sought after car. Any vehicle that can combine a sporting performance and such luxury will always sit well on a Christmas list. The only downside is perhaps there is just a certain lack of feedback and feel, but despite this it continues to lead. The M3 3.2 E46 often as not comes as standard with 225/45 R18 Z tyres on the front, and 255/40 R18 Z tyres on the back. Continental have produced a specific tyre designed for the M3. This Tyre uses an optimum rubber compound for the drive characteristics of the BMW M3. An alternative to the Continental is the Michelin Pilot Sport.
