Lost Car Keys: What Should You Do?

Losing your car keys can be an unpleasant experience. In terms of stress, it can be up there with finding out you have flat car tyres.

But, just like dealing with tyres, knowing the right steps to take if you have lost car keys can help you get back into your vehicle safely.

We’ve put together some pieces of advice in this guide that should help you navigate yourself out of this predicament.

Lost Car Keys: Immediate Actions

  1. Stay Calm, Search Thoroughly. Begin by retracing your steps. Check common places where keys might be left, such as pockets, bags, or around your home.

  2. Consider Security. If you think that your car keys have been stolen, it's very important that you contact the police and your insurance provider promptly to report the theft.

Replacement Car Keys

Once you've determined that your keys are indeed lost, consider the following for replacement:

  1. Contact your breakdown service if you have cover. Many of these providers offer key replacement as part of their services.
  2. Consult an auto locksmith who should be able to provide a quick and cost-effective solution. They are often able to cut and program new keys on-site. These will normally be blank generic keys – not OEM replacements.
  3. If an OEM replacement car key is what you want, then reach out to your dealership, who can provide you with a replacement key at a cost. However, this option may be more expensive and time-consuming.

Car Key Replacement Costs

As we’ve already touched briefly upon costs, it’s important to note that the cost of replacing a car key will vary. Factors such as the vehicle's make, model, and the type of key will come into effect.

Standard keys, such as the traditional keys that require you to insert the key into a lock, are typically less expensive to replace.

Whereas modern day remote or transponder keys are more complex and costly. This is mainly down to the fact there are programming requirements.

On average, you will find that a replacement key will be around £100 to £300 in price. Prices for luxury vehicles do tend to be higher than this, though.

Car Key Insurance Coverage

Some car insurance policies include key loss coverage.

It's advisable to review your policy or contact your insurer to determine if you're covered for lost keys.

If not, consider adding key cover to your policy for the future.

How To Avoid Lost Car Keys

To avoid losing your car keys, there are a few things you can do to reduce the risk.

Designate a car key spot. One of the best ways to keep on top of where your keys are is to keep them in the same spot at home each time you are not using them.

A bowl inside a drawer, or a hook on the wall are common forms of key storage which help to reduce the chances of misplacement.

Use a key finder. You can buy and attach Bluetooth trackers for your keys. This helps you to locate them easily if misplaced.

Lost Car Key FAQS

  1. Can a locksmith make a replacement key for my car on-site?

Yes, many specialist automotive locksmiths can create a new key on-site. They should have the required equipment needed to cut and program keys. This is true if you own an EV, 4x4 or other types of vehicles.

  2. What documents do I need to replace a lost car key?

You will likely need to provide proof of ownership (e.g., your V5C logbook) and some form of ID – such as a driving licence or passport.

  3. How can I secure keyless entry car keys from theft?

Keyless entry keys are vulnerable to relay theft. This is the process when a thief is able to amplify a key's signal to unlock your car. This can be prevented with a RFID-blocking pouch or metal container.

They can also use jammers to block the signal getting to your car and locking. Therefore, it’s always best to double-check you have properly locked the car before you set off.

  4. What should I do if I lock my keys inside the car?

If your keys are locked inside the car, contact your breakdown provider or an auto locksmith.
