When it’s time for new tyres, it’s easy to get overwhelmed.
Big names. Bold claims. Endless options. And somewhere in the middle of all that you are likely to find Goodyear and Dunlop.
There is a high chance that you will have heard of both. Their reputation and reach goes beyond tyres.
But figuring out which one is right for you is trickier.
Because it depends on what you value most - performance, price, comfort, or maybe just peace of mind.
Goodyear is one of those tyre brands that feels, well, established. Founded in 1898 in Ohio, they’ve had over a century to refine things.
Goodyear tends to focus on balance. Performance and safety.
Longevity without sacrificing grip. Very dependable. And sometimes that’s exactly what you want from your tyres.
Dunlop has a slightly different feel. They’re also historic - founded in 1889 - but their branding has leaned more toward motorsport. Performance. Grip.
For a long time, Dunlop’s presence in Europe, North America, and Oceania was managed by Goodyear.
But that changed recently. As of May 7, 2025, Goodyear officially sold its rights to the Dunlop brand in those regions—including associated intellectual property and tyre inventory—to Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI).
The Dunlop tyres you buy today were likely designed and developed before the sale. But over time, this could shift the brand's identity a bit. It’s hard to say for sure.
Honestly, they’re both good. Which sounds like a cop-out... but it’s true.
Goodyear probably wins more OEM deals, broader R&D backing, and arguably better all-season offerings. Especially for hybrid and electric cars.
Dunlop, now under full control of Sumitomo, might lean a bit harder into performance and sportiness. Some of their current tyres already reflect that, and they’ve long been a go-to for drivers who want more feedback from the road.
Choosing between tyre brands isn’t always about specs. Sometimes it’s about trust. Or price.
Whichever way you lean, you’re unlikely to regret it. Just make sure the tyre fits your actual needs.
