Volvo V50 – Tyre Option, 205/55 16, Pirelli P6000

The stylish new V50 from Volvo takes them light years from their old frumpy image but does not lose any of the safety aspects that Volvo are famous for. The car provides a smooth ride and as such the tyres need to work with the suspension settings on the cart to optimise this. The Dunlop SP2000 or the Continental Eco Contact will work well on this car as would the Michelin Pilot Primacy. As these tyres are designed to provide quiet smooth handling but still perform well under braking and cornering.

Volvo S40 – Tyre Option, 185/65 14, Continental Eco Contact

This excellent medium sized saloon is a worthy rival to the more established company car manufacturers. As such it will spend most of its life cruising on Motorways or longer drives; it needs a tyre that is quiet and responsive to changes in direction, which gives good life. Such a tyre is the Pirelli P6000 Powergy, an excellent alternative for this car. Also the Michelin Pilot Primacy is a beautifully constructed tyre that will add to the driving experience gained from this vehicle.

Volvo XC90 – Tyre Option, 225/70 16, Pirelli Scorpion STR

Volvo’s move into the 4x4 market created an instant class leader that challenged all the existing opposition. The Scorpion STR is a new tyre from Pirelli that has been designed to work at its best on the road offering grip and levels of quiet that are ground breaking for 4x4 tyres. The Michelin Synchrone is however an excellent alternative for a mainly on road 4x4 tyre. Off road options would depend on the degree of off roading that is intended, but an excellent option is the BF Goodrich, which is superb in difficult conditions but can lack sophistication on the road.

Do you know that on some vehicles it is possible to fit a different brand of tyre from what is currently on the car, you may find a different brand suits your budget and driving style better – so it’s always worth investigating. However some vehicle manufacturers do recommend that you keep the same brand of tyres that originally came on the vehicle as they have worked with the tyre manufacturers to develop vehicle specific fitments to improve the vehicle’s performance.
