The stylish new V50 Volvo makes up for in looks what it lacks in power. We found the V50 a little vacant on acceleration; however its top end speed was good. The insurance grouping as expected is low for the V50. The 1.8 model is good value at group 8 and worth looking at as a replacement for the BMW 3 series. Volvo deserves a round of applause for their new car designs, no doubt contributed to by the Ford design team. We hope that as the designs get better the insurance group stays low. So in summary this is a great family and work option for anyone looking for style at low cost.

This excellent medium sized saloon is a worthy rival to the more established company car manufacturers. As opposition to the ‘top of the range’ Mondeo models and the new Vectra from Vauxhall we see this as a leader in its class. The 1.8 model at group 9 is really good value, however be aware that if you are over 30 years old shopping from specialist brokers (for safer drivers) could secure you a significantly lower insurance quote.

We love this car! As 4x4’s go this is the one we see as excellent value and totally out of its manufactures usual character. This is Volvo’s attempt at entering a market segment with no baggage of historic design or bad performance – and they have pulled it off! The only fly in the ointment is the insurance group. No it is not very often you can say Volvo cars are insured expensively, this may be that time – at group 16 we do feel that you are paying for the styling and the image over and above the performance and security. Saying this we do prefer this to its competitors the BMW X5 and the Porsche Cayenne which are both around insurance group 19 and insurance group 20.
