Making Art Out of Tyres
One of the latest installations at the Tate Modern is consists of scraps of burst tyre and what can only be described as a “sliced” Citroen.
The artist who created the piece is called Gabriel Orozco and is originally from Mexico.
The work, named Chicotes, is made up of burst tyres which were collected from Mexican highways.
In a statement made about the new installation, Tate Modern said, “The scraps of rubber are still imbued with a kind of movement-memory - the rotation of car wheels and the explosion which caused them to be discarded. In elevating debris to the status of sculpture, Orozco once again demands that his viewers reassess their aesthetic responses to humble everyday materials and situations.”
