Real Time Smartphone Traffic Reports from Michelin
Michelin are set to launch a new map that works in conjunction with the iphone to provide users with the latest up to date traffic information. That new product is set to bring the two worlds of real time data and the printed map together for the first time.
At the present time this is a service that is only going to be rolled out in France, but there are plans to expand it into other countries if it proves to be popular. The whole thing works by users downloading a free app for their iphone – either Mobile Tag or ViaMichelin. Users then launch the app, choose the region they desire and then – using the iphone’s camera – take a photo of the map. Real time traffic information is then grafted on top of the image. Users can then zoom in and out or scan through the road network using the iphone’s touch screen capabilities.
In a statement from the French tyre manufacturer, they said, ““With the invention of the interactive road map, Michelin has brought the printed map into the age of real-time information. The key to this innovative offering is the data matrix code, a two-dimensional matrix barcode that can be accessed by Smartphones.”
The launch of the real time French traffic map coincides – by no accident – with the 100th anniversary of the very first Michelin road map.
