New: Michelin Alpin 7 Tyre Launched

This month, May 2024, Michelin are set to launch the new Michelin Alpin 7 winter tyre range.

Succeeding the previous Michelin Alpin 6 – which was originally launched in 2018 - the Alpin 7 has been designed for longevity, is suitable for EV, and has achieved 3PMSF (3 Peaks Mountain Snowflake) accreditation.

Michelin Alpin 6 vs Michelin Alpin 7

Many people may be asking how the new Michelin Alpin 7 compares to its predecessor the Alpin 6.

According to Michelin’s data, the Alpin 7 delivers a better performance on snow braking – based on tests conducted by UTAC, on Michelin's request in North Finland (Mellatracks), in December 2023.

The new tyre also boasts better acceleration than the Alpin 6 – again based upon the tests that were conducted by UTAC, in December 2023.

Overall, the tests found that the Alpin 7 delivers key performance improvements in the following areas, when compared to the Alpin 6:

Michelin Alpin 7 Technology

The Michelin Alpin 7 has been developed to provide motorists with enhanced grip in cold weather.

The tyre technology used by Michelin in this new winter tyre has taken a big step forward with, a new compound designed for low temperatures.

This compound keeps a strong grip on the road, helping drivers to better control the car when accelerating, braking, and cornering.

Michelin's Alpin 7 also features new grooves which appear as the tyre wears down. This smart tread pattern means that over the lifespan of the tyre, the performance levels do not diminish -  especially in the snow.

The latest design also includes more sipes—tiny cuts in the tread that provide extra grip on icy roads.

A directional tread pattern helps drivers maintain control in winter conditions. It's a big improvement in safety and shows how modern tyre technology is creating better and safer tyres for drivers.

For when the snow and ice begins to melt, the tyre’s tread pattern has been designed to move surface water away quickly and efficiently from the tyre’s footprint. Therefore, significantly reducing the risk of aquaplaning on wet roads.

Broader Impact in the Tyre Industry

In the UK, there is a heavy emphasis on all season tyres – such as the Michelin CrossClimate 2. Given the changeable winter and the performances these tyres deliver in all types of weather.

However, there is still a sizeable segment of motorists who choose winter tyres – tyres that can deliver the very best in snow performance. This is especially true for those living in the UK's highest and most remote places.

The Michelin Alpin 7 looks set to become a large part of the winter tyre market. With a lot of emphasis and development going into the snow performances for the tyre.

Michelin Alpin 7 Tyre Sizes

The new tyre is sent to launch with 58 different tyre sizes available – ranging from 15 inch to 20 inch tyres.
