What is Adblue?

If you own a diesel car, you'll probably need to refill your AdBlue tank occasionally between regular services. AdBlue is an essential additive that helps cut down on harmful pollutants released by many diesel engines.

Should a warning light for AdBlue pop up on your dashboard, it's wise not to delay topping it up. Letting your AdBlue levels run low can lead to a spike in your vehicle's emissions and, over time, might even stop your engine from starting. Additionally, your car could switch to 'limp mode', which limits how fast you can drive.

What does AdBlue do to a car?

AdBlue® technology is increasingly common in modern diesel vehicles, serving as a crucial tool for reducing harmful exhaust emissions.

AdBlue plays a vital role in transforming noxious nitrogen oxide (NOx) gases into harmless nitrogen (N) and water vapour (H2O), thereby lessening environmental pollution. The likelihood of a diesel vehicle utilising AdBlue tends to rise with its recency. However, its use varies depending on the vehicle's make and model, as not all diesel cars are equipped with AdBlue technology.

For cars that do employ AdBlue technology, maintaining regular top-ups is essential to prevent your vehicle from entering limp mode or failing to start. A low AdBlue level triggers a warning light on your dashboard to let you know it’s time for a refill.

AdBlue Top Up

AdBlue is a non-toxic solution which is made up of mixture of urea and deionized water. This solution is sprayed into a diesel engine’s exhaust system to help lower the nitrous oxide emissions of the vehicle.

Frequent Asked Questions

Can I top up my AdBlue myself?

Yes, it is possible for you to top up AdBlue yourself. It's a simple process that helps maintain your vehicle's emissions control system.

How often should you top up AdBlue?

The frequency of AdBlue top-up will vary. On average you can expect to require a top up at 3,000 to 6,000 miles - depending on the rate at which your vehicle uses the AdBlue.

Do UK petrol stations have AdBlue pumps?

Yes, many petrol stations in the UK provide AdBlue at their pumps. This can make it convenient for drivers to refill their AdBlue tanks during fuel stops.

Can I run my diesel without AdBlue?
